Is classical music really acceptable to listen to?

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
How do you know it will not have a negative spiritual effect on some people..

Any arguments for classical music? apart from mind and body benefits?

And if some classical music is not sinful to listen to.. how do you which types of music are okay and which are not okay to listen to?

  • With any type of music besides spiritual songs, i think it is ok to listen to as long as it is not causing you to think of any bad thoughts, or anything you shouldn't be thinking about.

If you are referring to classical music with no words in particular, I think it is fine because you usually contemplate on the words of a song.

However, I do believe that spiritual songs are the best to listen to, though it may be hard at times to do this continually. We all need to pray for God's Grace,

  • Clasical Music opens your mind and relaxes you basically when you do home work its better to listen to bach then 50 cent ;D
  • Classical music is not something bad. It is like relieving and it lets you listen to better music than 50 cent, like Adeotatus said. I think it helps you out sometime. It puts you in a different time and its NOT bad, my friend has to listen to it for school and she enjoys it. its really not bad, unless maybe its like the only thing u focus on

  • I atually had a lecture on this topic and the servant who was teaching me told me that classical music was great for you and that it was proven scientifically that it helps btring up your test scores. As for rock and roll and rap it is bad cause it gets you in a hyper mood and as some people said makes you contemplate on the words being said which are usually not appropriate. These types of music were proven to bring yor test grades down (rok and rap).

OF COURSE THE BEST TYPE OF MUSIC IS ALHAN AND TARANEEM
LOL ( no seriously it really is)
hope it helped and pray for me
  • I agree with everything said. Classical music is great to listen to when studying, and in fact i always use it :-[ lol.

Also, there is something called the 'mozart effect' that some of you may be familiar with. Basically it is:

"The Mozart effect can refer to a set of research results that indicate that listening to certain kinds of complex music may induce a short-lived (fifteen minute) improvement on the performance of certain kinds of mental tasks known as "spatial-temporal reasoning;"*Popularized versions of the theory, which suggest that "listening to Mozart makes you smarter," or that early childhood exposure to classical music has a beneficial effect on mental development"

I mean i personally find classical music to be helpful.. Rabana Maak.

princess mary: if u are referring to good classical music then:
    swan lake by tchaikovsky
    peer gynt suit by grieg
    carmen suit bizet
    and march slav by mozart

  • Most of the classical music is composed by christians, mostly catholic, a few centuries ago. So the textures are not that different from ours.

I love Swan Lake, I love to play, I played it on the piano I think in 6th grade music class, I love it so much, but how do you pronounce the author or this song, it seems like he is from Europe! I listen to classical music often, and as micha_el said most classical music are composed by christians, meaning christian bands right?

  • Thanks alot guys!
  • Many operas are just as explicit as the stuff they play on MTV, so to say that all classical music is ok is wrong. It should be approached like any other type of music:
    Is the content sinful?
Does it cause me to think bad thoughts?
Would I play it to a priest?

tchaikovsky is actually Russian. and whats meant by micha_el's comment is that most composers of classical music, during the Baroque period and the 18th century, were religious, namely catholic.

Go watch an opera with subtitles - many of them are all about sexual promiscuity and whatnot. No different from what you'll hear at a Fat Joe concert. But the fact that opera is such an old artform (and that most people have no idea what is being said) it is seen as something admirable. A bit like the Roman pornographic mosaics, statues and paintings you'll see in Pompeii - they're on display for everyone to see, regardless of age. Yet a similar work of "art" made today would never be allowed at a exhibition.
  • well that is an understandable claim. However, the opera is not bad. One needs to understand the context of such works to analyze them, namely political, cultural, and ideological realities at the time. All operas are not bad. In fact the golden age of classical music, the baroque period, was filled with protestant and catholic musicians who composed music and operas in keeping with the christian ideal. I suggest "The Messiah" by Handel, this may cause a change of opinion.

Of course. Many operas are great. My point was that classical music, like any other, has good stuff and bad stuff and that just because its opera it is automatically better than anything else.
  • Well listen... if the kinds of music you listen to are bad and have disrispectful things in it don't listen to it, or you can listen to it but not like do what they do or act the way they act.
