What is exaxtly meant by an unworthy manner?

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
1 Corinthains 11:29
For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

I thought the Pope said we do not partake because we are worthy, but rather needy//

So what are the things exactly that could be considered an unworthy manner?

Thanks...........................Pray for me...

  • I think this verse is about communion. Like you can't take communion, unless you repented, confessed and so on. So when you go take communion without all of that, you are taking it in an unworthy manner and bringing judgement to yourself by doing so.
    Hope that helped.
  • well repent, confess, have a pure heart, understand what you are partaking from ( that it's not just wine and bread), believe that you are actually having communion with Christ, believe in the transformation that happens to the bread and wine and know that you are taking body and blood (the same body and blood that Jesus had, that was crucified).

I don't know if that's all or not, so anyone feel free to add to that.

    2- Confession...

    what else?

That's pretty much it actually. Particular emphasis is placed on having true faith in the teachings of the Church, especially the true presence of our Lord in the Eucharist, as well as humility, and reconciliation with others; true repentence encompasses all these in any event, and Confession absolves us from them.

There's also physical pre-conditions to worthiness, such as fasting etc.

You will find that most of this is covered in H.G. Bishop Mettaos' book on the Sacrament of the Eucharist. He also notes the relevant Liturgical responses that go to remind us that we must be worthy before partaking of the Eucharist e.g. "The holies are for the holy" (said by the priest) and "Pray for the worthy partaking of the Immaculate, heavenly and Holy Mysteries" (said by the Deacon during the Last Confession).
  • I think you also are not allowed to take Communion if you have any emissions from the night or something?
