Non-Orthodox Religious Music

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
Hi,

Is it permissible to listen to religious music even though they might contain heretical ideas?

For example, is it acceptable for me to listen to a reggea tune which states that God should be the focus of our life, that we should do good, fear the judgement day, work to create justice in the world and not focus on the accumulation of money and committing sexual immorality - all Christian values - BUT which at the same time hails Marcus Garvey as a prophet and Emperor Haile Selassie II of Ethiopia as God (the second coming of Christ) - a great heresy?

Your thoughts please

thanks

  • Heresy is blasphemy, and may hence be categorised as a form of profanity. In this sense, such music is no better or safer than music promoting sexual deviation and employing foul language.
  • so, r u askin whether it is ok to listen to un- orthodox music? if u r, i heard a bishops sermon on it: there r 3 main kinds of music- hymns, classical and pop hip hop etc music. hymns r encouraged to listen 2, they r beneficial. classical music is acceptable to listen to as it calms the soul. but hip hop and worldy music which is saturated with sex, drugs and meaningless violenec is wrong to listen to. hope that helped, and pray for me :D also as for the heretical musical thing, if it is a heresy, then of course no u shouldnt listen to it
