Salvation...

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
If a person often confesses his known sins and his lack of doing good deeds and takes holy communion often will that person be saved even if that person never was free from all sin or did not do good deeds..?

Also who knows how much good deeds God requires from someone..? or what good deeds?

You are not required to be sinless to partake of Communion; you are only required to be repentent--to be truly struggling with and battling sin. Ultimately it is up to your FOC to decide whether you are not worthy enough for Communion; he makes this decision according to the information you disclose to him regarding your sins and your spiritual life, so just make sure you're honest with him.

The road to Salvation is not a mathematical formula whereby you need to accomplish a certain amount of good deeds to purchase a ticket to heaven. Performing good deeds is not something we owe God, but rather something God requires us to perform for ourselves, in order that we may be renewed to our original state and to ultimately achieve His likeness; such a state is naturally disposed towards the performance of charitable works, yet we cannot get there unless we respond to His Grace calling us towards such a life in the first place.

God has given us each a measure of faith; we are only expected to work with what we have been given, and by the Grace of God to grow from there as far as His Grace leads us. God never gives us more than we can handle, and we should never despair at the irrational thought that salvation is beyond us; as the Lord says, "my Grace is sufficient for you" (2 Cor. 12:9).
  • Thanks for your reply Iqbal.. you may not agree with me but I think good deeds are necessary for salvation so we ought to fear (?) we have not done enough or something..

"Why does the Church feel it necessary to offer so many prayers during the first few days? The soul does not lose its consciousness; it is aware of what is going on, but is unable to communicate with the living in any way. Being perhaps bewildered by the strangeness, the prayers must be a great comfort. Moreover, it has to face a great trial. Accusing demons will come and try to find some unrepented sin, even a forgotten one, and if their accusations are not outweighed by the virtues presented by the angels, together with the prayers offered up by the faithful, then the unhappy soul may well be dragged away by the demons."

Is it a sin for me to copy from that site if it has copyright?

DON'T WE GET ABSOLVED (?) OF ANY SINS WE FORGOT TO MENTION TO THE PRIEST?

What if we have any forgotten unrepented sin?

You are right that the performance good deeds is fundamental to salvation, but you shouldn't think of it as something burdensome and fearful. Just do your best with the opportunities and gifts you are given and God's Grace will complete everything. God's Mercy and Compassion are never-ending; God is not standing over your shoulder like a cranky critic accusing you of not doing enough good deeds, He is carrying you as an encouraging companion and enabling you in your transformation to the image of Christ--a state where the performance of good deeds becomes so easy by virtue of it being in your very nature to do so.

What if we have any forgotten unrepentant sin?

If one has not repentend of a certain sin, this implies that that sin is still very much a part of that person's life, so it wouldn't make sense to say that they it is beyond their memory.
  • If I had no sin I would not have to fear God..

    Philippians 2 (King James Version)
12Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

    So I have to fear...
  • If I had no sin I would not have to fear God..

    That's just wrong.

The command to fear God regards approaching God with Reverance in recognition of Who He Is as the All-Holy One, as opposed to approaching God with fright at the thought of incurring His wrathful response to our sins.
  • I do not have to fear Gods wrath because of the sins ive repented of but because of new sins I have not repented of and because of not doing good deeds I think..
