21 Days to form a new habit

edited May 2009 in Faith Issues
Is this true? or is this a man made philosophy?

I know we need God's help in time of crisis. I know He is faithful to help.

It would be good if I can learn some new habits also.. like brushing my teeth, taking a shower lol

Dr Maxwell Maltz said
Brain circuits take engrams (memory traces), and produce neuroconnections and neuropathways only if they are bombarded for 21 days in a row. This means that our brain does not accept ‘new’ data for a change of habit unless it is repeated each day for 21 days (without missing a day)."

Is it true?

  • I would say that it is true based on observations of human behaviour.

Almost everything we do is habitual. Much better we build good habits than bad.

And habits must take a certain amount of time to become habits. It would not be surprising to me that it is about 21 days.

Why not try it and see. I am sure that the exact date is variable, but it seems to me that the principle is sound.
