One God?

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
You hear it every where now..."We all worship the same god anyway, whether we're Christian, Jew, Moslim, Hindu, etc".

Clearly the Orthodox faith does not agree with the above statement.
I'm looking for solid references (church fathers, Orthodox dogma) that discusses, disproves and argues against this point.

any help?

  • I don't think you need any special patristic arguments. It seems obvious to me that a Hindu who worships many Gods is not worshipping the one God of the Christians.

Likewise the Jews have rejected the Messiah and therefore do not worship the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

And the Muslims have spent the last 1500 years killing Christians. In what way is it possible to say that their God is the same as that of the Christians?

To reject Christ is to reject God. He is God. To call him a blasphemer or a mere prophet is to deny that he is God. Therefore whatever God Muslims and Jews worship is not the Christian God.

This does not mean that God cannot begin to work in the heart of a Hindu, Jew or Muslim and reveal himself to them in some way. But the God of the Koran is not the Christian God. The God of the Jews who rejected Christ is not the Christian God. And the many Gods of the Hindus, or the non-God of the Buddhists is not the Christian God.

The Scriptures are clear. All these other Gods are demons. But we may hope and should pray that God will reveal himself to all those in these other false religions, and that we might not be filled with pride or arrogance but might be humbled that God has made himself known to us though we do not and cannot deserve such kindness.
