Who should I vote for?

edited December 1969 in Coptic Orthodox Church
I am posting this thread here as I would like to know which Political Party the Coptic Orthodox Church would suggest we vote for this coming May in the UK elections?

I am really torn.

Is it labour ?

I really like David Cameron, but he also voted for the war in Iraq.

There's the Lib Dems, but it worries me a PM like Nick Clegg who reminds me of a bus conductor.

And then, Im not sure, should we be in Europe or out of Europe? I never really saw the Brits as European, they seem to have more in common with India and Pakistan.

I really want to make the right choice, and its very confusing.

I am happy to vote for ANY party who introduces National Service again for all youths under 21; but no one is doing that.

I feel our Government systematically rewards irresponsibility and I'm fed up of it, so Labour are not top in my book. They have no respect for married couples, and the only person getting a tax break under them is if you are gay, divorced, transvestite, handicapped, or both. What's worth, they encourage teenage pregnancies by giving single mothers with babies priority to own their own council house.

Eh da!!

  • Vote for the one with the lowest Tax profile.

They (politicians) are all liars and unethical.  At least go for the one that will take the lesser/least amount of money out of your pocket.
  • Thx ilovestmarc i want tobe a politician later:p

I agree with you, vote lib dem, lower taxes, better economic policies i think, and it relatively offers the most freedom

Op, read something about political philosophy and develop youre own opinions and ideology about politics

Thanks Aegyptian for your advice. However, i'm curious as to the position of the CoC with respect to voting. Who do they encourage us to vote for?

They argue that we should vote for a party that has good moral values, but in practice, I realised that labour (although socialist) rewards social and moral irresponsibility.

What does the CoC suggest  - that is my question!!
  • Oh ok my bad, misunderstood your question.

However, I don't think the CoC has any suggestion for what to vote (but maybe someone else can tell you otherwise). Especially not in countries other than Egypt.

I can tell you however that the Christian churches in Holland in the past (1890 until 1970) (protestant and catholic, not the orthodox church obviously) obviously suggested people should vote Christian/Christian Democrat parties. I think that IF the church would give a suggestion to you, it would be a party that most resembles a "Christian-democrat" party, which is, if I recall correctly, the Conservative Party.

I know in Holland and Germany, you have Christian Democratic Parties (or their equivalents) - but do they make a difference?

Prostitution in Holland is not only legal, it is a huge tourist attraction - what difference have these parties made?

Drugs in Holland is a huge business also - is there any point in them saying they have Christian beliefs when their country promotes such immorality? Not only "promotes it" - but Holland EXPORTS immorality. They want to legalise a lot of drugs here in the UK, and prostitution as they look to Holland as an example.

These "Christian" political parties - as you mentioned, they have nothing to with Orthodoxy nor Chrisitanity.

In fact, I really believe that Christian parties who do not reflect Chrisitan principles promote racism, intolerance and fanatism.

Do you think a muslim, when he comes to Holland, from the Middle East, and sees that prostitution is legal, he will in ANY WAY want to know Christianity? Do you think such policies will help him to respect the country he is in. He will look at Holland (or any European Country he may be in) as a backward country, with backward people and be MORE attached to his Islamic Ideals. He will make sure that his family are not integrated in society at all - on the contrary, he wouldn't want to be part of that society anyway.

The same in the UK: muslims see the Brits as Christian, and they see the government as Chrisitan. WHen the government is seen to promote and reward sexual promiscuity, teenage pregnancies, out of marriage pregnancies, abortions, etc, they will not feel they really "want" to integrate in this country. On the contrary, they will insist on their islamic identities and communities: that just leads to a fragmented society. Its not multicultural at all: its a DIVIDED society. The danger in calling such societies as multi-cultural is it is a lie. Muslims do NOT want to integrate, and you've alienated them by creating a country that has no ethical fiber in it, nor any moral backbone. England can see itself as being "multicultural" , but in reality, it is very much divided, and those from Islamic backgrounds, if they are devout muslims, would not really want to consider themselves British.

When all this is done in the name of "Christian Political Parties" -do you think in anyway anyone will want to know Christ? Do you think people will think of Orthodoxy as different, or do you think they will just paint all Christian Churches with the same brush?

In the past, yes they did, even now they do. The smaller protestant parties try to push orthodox christian policies, and the CDA ( christian democrat party ) promotes more liberal christian policies. But when they weren't governing (from 1990 until 1998 iirc), liberal parties pushed trough their liberal agenda. Long story short, yes they do make a difference.

You should note that there is a difference in a party that is in government, and a party that's not. Ofcourse, the 'Christian' parties would not allow non-Christian policies if they were to be in government.

They want to legalise a lot of drugs here in the UK, and prostitution as they look to Holland as an example.

You have to note that there's a difference between a moral position, and a 'legal' position. Ofcourse as a christian you would oppose these laws, but when you take these policies from a 'legal' position, I personally would say, who gives the state the power to take freedoms from their citizens? Why should I force other people to live according to my rules?

These "Christian" political parties - as you mentioned, they have nothing to with Orthodoxy nor Christianity.

'nothing' is too big of a word, but yes, I agree, they have less to do with Christianity than they really claim.

In fact, I really believe that Christian parties who do not reflect Chrisitan principles promote racism, intolerance and fanatism.

Mwoah I don't know, but I most certainly agree that they do not reflect the 'Truth' according to the Bible.
