Samson and Delilah

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
Hi,

WHat are your contemplations on this story. I find it so fascinating and touching. But what can you learn from this?
What do our Church fathers tell us about this remarkable and sad story.

Why was Samson's strength in his hair? Why was that? What is the spiritual significance of that?

I get the impression, that we should not flaunt or show off our talents, nor waste them foolishly, but rather use them for God's Glory. But I just feel, in fact, im 1000% sure there is more to this story than just a simple message of staying away from women.

Thanks

  • Samson was a Nazarite, the same as Samuel. hey were not allowed to cut or comb their hair (technically forming dreadlocks) . They were supposedly renowned for their holiness and piety, and given great strength by God.

As for the strength being in his hair, it is my undstanding that his strength was not physically in his hair but by growing his hair and keeping it long he was showing his piety and given great strength by God. When his hair was shaved God left him for his disobedience in telling Delilah the source f his strength and this sign of his obedience to God. This is also why it returned when he asked God to avenge the trickery.

I believe the message is one of not falling to temptation or going against vows you make to God. It also shows that God is a loving and forgiving God, as he saw the piety and repentence of Samson in his final hours and so granted him the strength of his final victory.
  • My cut on the story:  "Do not compromise yourself for the wiles of a tramp."  Do not let your hormones lead you.  Let your heart and soul be guided by God.
