you should learn it man, i said the same thing last summer, and i just found a website with arabic letters, made flash cards and then learned how to read in a month. It's really not as hard as you think.

geomike, can you read without tashkeel?
I've never heard of this, so I just looked it up on Google. Wow. What a cool program! I sure could have used something like this when I was learning Arabic in college! I can read pretty well, but since I'm no longer in an Arabic-speaking environment (haven't been for over two years now), my vocabulary is back to almost nothing (not that it was ever amazing...), and when I encounter a new Arabic word I generally have to guess from the context and hope nobody asks me to read it out loud. :-[ I have to guess a lot...but I guess it's easier since now I only learn Arabic in taraneem! :) If I had Arabic-speaking relatives like you guys do, I probably couldn't be so lighthearted about it.
Well, actually the tashkeel confuses me(that's really ironic). I have just been speaking arabic my whole life so the pronunciation just comes naturally, but of course i am not perfect. I read at the level of a 6 - 7 grader. so i am not really fluent in reading yet.

I learned 5 years ago and still can't read. I practice a looot, almost daily. I'm really not sure why it's taking me so long.
