Appearances

If you saw someone covered in tattoos, long beard, beaten up jeans, what would you think?

If you saw an african american with saggy pants, tattoos, jewelry, red bandana with a hat over it turned to the side, what would you think of him?

If you saw a white man, very well groomed, nice expensive clothing, with a nice smile, what would you think?

If you saw a young woman in a short skirt, tight shirt with cleavage showing, 1lb of makeup on, done up hair, with high heels, what would you think of her?

  • What amazing effort God has put in making each of His children so unique! :)

If you really would think this if you encountered them, God bless you.

Same thing I would think, I love the cultural variation in our society.

I am sure most people do, but would you think any of these particular people were Orthodox or non-Orthodox?

It depends on what you mean by orthodox.
If they accept that what they are wearing is right, then it is fine, let them wear it. And anyways, if everyone was modest and wore nothing but a tunic, wouldn't that be a bit of a boring society?
  • LOL. Khas, your failing to see my point. never mind.
  • I would feel pity for them - though I know pity is a way of judging others.
  • The point is that appearances can tell us about a person. It is not right to make assumptions based on appearance, because we certainly could be wrong. But outward appearance can tell us about the person. For instance, when I see a woman covered with the Ethiopain "gabi" or "netela" I assume she is a very modest Orthodox Christian, because that is generally specific to the Orthodox woman. The point of the post was to try and get people thinking that your appearance says a lot about you and what you believe.

Of course I am wrong and sooner or later tweedle dee and tweedle dumb will chime in telling me just how wrong and stupid I am. So it doesn't matter what I say.

  • I can kinda relate with you on this one, Ioannes. What I hate is how much of a politically correct society we live in, where it gets to the point that there are certain things you can't say, even when they are certainly true. That being said, appearances can still only tell you so much. It may also have to do with how a person was brought up, especially those with parents who don't want to tell their kids that there is a right and wrong in what they believe and do.
