Well done for making this initiative, by the way! I wish I could learn Coptic also as a language. I find that the Tasbeha is done so fast that I cannot keep up at times.
A link would be great to go to youtube. And the tasbeha and hymns is the main reason as to why I would like to learn coptic, I love the coptic hymns and praises but I dont get to understand all of it so a solution would be to learn it!
That's very pro-active of you to take it upon yourself to learn this awesome language.
I'm sure if you typed Learn Coptic in YouTube, you'll get loads of videos. However, I think these videos are there to help you learn how to read Coptic, not really how to understand it as a language.
Thank you guys so much for your help and support, please pray for me! And with the last link I stumbled upon it as well but I was hoping someone could provide a link to buy it within Australia as most of those sites do not have it in stock so maybe any Australians know a good shop around the place or maybe in your bookshop at church that has it?
I just saw this post. I have the book, so if you haven't bought it yet and want to ask questions, I'm open. I also have a bunch of other random pdfs with coptic basics.
Thats great! Would you mind me asking where did you buy it from, I'm still looking for a place to buy it from (with relatively low shipping! cuase I'm Egyptian born and raised!). It would be great to have a look at the pdfs as well. I was also wandering if anything you had contained a table for the 14 prefixes, sorry I don't know their technical name but for example 1st would be present simple - I = ti You=ek etc. for all 14 tenses it would be terrific if you do!
the people in my church sing the tasbeha so fast that I might as well learn Coptic also just to keep up. Its too fast to even read the translation whilst they are singing in Coptic.
You seem like you know more than is taught in a lot of the pdfs, but there is also a few dictionaries, and I believe the one by plumely is a source for so you want to learn Coptic".
Those prefixes are called dependent personal pronouns or just subject prefixes
They are ti (I), ek (you masc),te (you fem), ef (he), es (she), ten (we), teten (you plural), se (they)
The subject prefix for you masculine can be either a kei (x looking thing) with a jinkim or a kappa (k looking thing) with a jinkim. This depends on the first letter of the infinitive. If the first letter is one of the vilminor letters, then kei with a jinkim is used. Kappa with a jinkim is used for all other letters.
I randomly found this pdf with a tiny but useful portion of the book, which also explains what the vilminor letters are.
@lfahmy how deep does that book go? I understand basic Coptic grammar and can translate some pieces but I want to learn all the strange conjugations and what not and start looking at manuscripts eventually. Should I get this book or something more advanced?
I just bought this book and for me it goes pretty deep and it doesn't seem like its just basic grammar. You can look at the contents page in the google link above.
Pachom, I'm not too sure about the strange conjugations. If you read the other Coptic related discussion, someone commented and mentioned some verbs that maintain weird conjugations. I'm not sure of they're in the book though. I couldn't find any when I looked.
