I am taking a speech class and I was thinking to talk about lottery for my persuasive speech
I think that lottery is not just waste of money but it can also be an addiction
I work in a store where they sell lottery
I know a customer who comes and spends about 27.00 dollars at least twice a week
so one time I asked her are you going to stop or something like that, don't remember exactly
she said ,"I have spent too much to stop now"
that means that it can be an addiction like anything else
"All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." 1 corinth 6:12
besides there is a statistic that said that a person is more likely to get struck by lightening or get in a car crash than to win the lottery. i Can get the statistic if anyone wants it.
Lottery is a form of gambling so you have to see what the Coptic Church teaches about gambling. It is a waste of money to play lottery since think of how much you would spend on it weekly. The post above me said that one person spends $27.00 two times a week. Instead of throwing it away in a goal for personal gain, couln't you not have used that same money you spent on the tickets to give to the poor? It would be better for the soul if you took the money you were going to spend on lottery and instead buy a meal for a homeless person possibly.
I agree with what everyone has said but just as a side note...If someone wins the lottery and decides he/she should give someone money to the church...dont even try the church wont accept that money

My priest told me that we give money to the church as appreciation to God. we give the church part of the money that we tired to get. the lottery money is money that you get just like that
i agree, that's a very good article (and short!) playing the lottery is 1. trusting in chance, not God, so sinful 2. encouraging a system which keeps poor people in debt because they keep playing the lottery to try to escape poverty. so even if you are not addicted, you keep the lottery going by being one of millions who occasionally buy tickets and support their business. so, i think it's indirectly sinning, like it says in the agpeya 'forgive us for those sins we commit without knowing'.
anyways if someone wins the lottery, the church does not accept money at all. IT is because as evrybody said, its gambling. Its a sin if you abuse it and waste all of ur money
i don't think it's only a sin if you abuse it and waste all your money....even if you don't abuse it, i still think it's wrong for the reasons HGBY mentioned... the one that stands up for me the most is that simply the Bible teaches us that we must work in order to eat and do something useful

Hi,
I agree, I feel God wants us to work for our living - no matter how much we earn. In any case, where exactly in the Bible does it say that we should work for our living? (Other than Genesis, in the most obvious part).
I think the lottery is spiritually not right because, you are putting your trust/hopes in winning rather than through God blessing anything you may/maynot do through labour.
Jesus Christ took 7 loaves of bread and 2 fish, He blessed them and fed with them 5000 men. Pizza delivery angels did not come down from Heaven and serve everyone jewish Pizza. He took the resources available (bread and fish), He thanked God, blessed it, and fed everyone.
So, I think we need to ask God to bless our resources rather than putting hopes in winning money.
Its a personal issue. I am NOT saying playing the lottery is wrong, but I'm just saying that your relationship with God, and the hope you place in God in blessing your hard work may be more fruitful than placing your hopes in winning the lottery.
Also, there's a huge difference. Playing the lottery is running after money. Working hard for a living, and then earning money, whether or a lot or a little, is not running after money - it is just working for a living.
Hey, it’s not like that b’coz it’s just a game, yes with money but normally we play games for fun or exercise so why not for money. I know lottery is illegal in some countries but not b’coz it’s a sin.
you bring up a good point, but it leads to addiction. my father puts all his hopes in winning the lottery and wastes so much money on trying to get that one ticket with the jackpot.
plus, where's the fun in it? I honestly don't see how it's fun at all to purchase a peice of paper.
1st let me say this: To say its gambling is not entirely true. I play the lottery sometimes and I don't even care to check the numbers. The reason is the 2 tickets I buy is usually for a good cause or some charity event.
Even our Church used to have a Tombola or lottery event in the past.
But: Could God use the lottery ticket to help you? Let's say you prayed to God to win the lottery, and you won. Is that God's will?
I don't think God will use the lottery to help you. I have my reasons behind that that I can't quite explain, but I'm pretty sure - God isn't involved if you win or lose. Its most likely in His will to help you win.
I think playing for fun is OK (1 or 2 tickets); but going off and buy $1000 of tickets EVERY lottery is just insane. If you are addicted, than its a sin. yes.
My grand-parents in law got me this $5 scratch card for Christmas (as a joke). I won $3000. It was SO embarrassing. I didnt get Christmas presents for anyone, and we left the entire evening with $3000.
For me, playing the lottery could show God a few things. Firstly, that I love money and that I'm willing to spend money to accumulate money. Second, it shows that I'm not willing to work for my money but lazily attempt to acquire it from other sources based on chance and random selection. Third, I always remember "the laborer is worthy of his wages". What labor for the glory of God have I achieved in order to acquire this money? I am only helping to precipitate an industry which in many cases makes people more dependent on this kind of gaming sometimes to the detriment of their conscience.
I'm not equating the lottery to other sins, because certainly it's mild in comparison and many have done it innocently, not knowing any better. However, the end of it all is what can destroy a man. I remember hearing a story of a man who committed suicide by jumping off Niagara falls. Apparently he had lost all his life saving gambling it away in a Casino there. While most won't commit suicide, this story illustrates the downward spiral which pitted a man against his willingness to win something to the point of loosing it all..It's sad and shouldn't have happened.
It's simply an industry which makes too much money off of people's misfortune. Also, spiritually, "the love of money is the root of all evil" Christ himself warned us. I think God gave us all talents and skills to use in relation to our gifts so that we may work and may be worthy of our wages. Gambling and lottery is perhaps telling God that I do not have sufficient faith in what he gave me in terms of skills and talents..
