Rape in the OT

edited December 1969 in Faith Issues
“But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. 26 But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter. 27 For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her.

28 “If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out, 29 then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days.
p (Deutoronomy 22)

does this mean if he rapes her while she is betrothed then he shall die, but if she's not then they have to get married because he 'humbeld' her. But in the first case it says there is no sin upon her, so why do they call her being raped, humbling her? Does it mean she is not worth much anymore since no man will take her if she's not a virgin?

Could someone clarify please?

  • i dont understand also. how the raped girl can be told to merry the man who raped her??
  • If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die—the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil from Israel. “If a young woman who is a virgin is betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he humbled his neighbor’s wife; so you shall put away the evil from among you. “But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter. For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her. “If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out, then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days.

yes... if he rapes a married woman, and she cries, then only he dies... if she does not... they both die... if she's in the countryside... "away from civilization"  so she screamed and no on can hear her! only he dies.

now for the not married... the man has to marry her to take care of her, and she will alway be married to him... to fix for what he did! it is not very prideful for a man to marry a non-virgin... if you read earlier... “But if the thing is true, and evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman, then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done a disgraceful thing in Israel, to play the harlot in her father’s house. So you shall put away the evil from among you.... so if she's not a virgin she'd be killed... so God decided to make the man take care of that woman until he dies... thats why if the woman is married, it doesn't matter, for in the end of the day she's married... and the guy is killed... but if she's not... God wants to make sure their taken care of!

  • I read from a commentary about this. It seems to be the woman's choice she does not have to accept his marriage proposal. The commentary adds more.
