What should I Study when I finish High school( and what should i be)

edited December 1969 in Youth Corner
Hi people out there.
i'm 15 and i go to a  selective high school (Selective high schools provide an educationally enriched environment for highly achieving, academically gifted students.- straight from the website-https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/media/downloads/reports_stats/sel_high.pdf)

I am having troubles thinking of what i want to be in the future. so far in mind i have being a Surgeon and to become a surgeon you need to study medicine and then complete more degrees such as a master of surgery and so on.

Also the think that is worrying me is, if i do not get into medicine what should I do. so far i'm considering biomedical engineering or physiotherapy( if you work in theses fields please tell me what you think about it) and after i complete this degree i will try to do graduate medicine ( If you live in Australia you might be able to understand this)( and probably America?)

so if anyone can help out that will be a great help cause i am really stuck on what to do

also tell me of any good professions( i'm interested in the field of science) ??? please help

And finally, being part of the egyptian community i feel that im sort of being puished into working in the fields of pharmacy and medicine.

  • hey Adomad,
i see why ur soo stressed out.. lol.. enough that u belong to the egyptian community.... but noo pressure whatsoever;)lol..
look if u can't get into medicine and then specialise into surgery as u said, then u can always do a 'bridging' course.. a good one  is MEDICAL SCIENCE!! wat do u think?? getting into medicine can be a real big prob at times, whether its because of ur UAI, UMAT or even ur interview... but u can always 'not do so well' in these three and still get into medical science and then from that into medicine... but hey, just letting u kno, that if u do that, u'll probably be a 'gedo' by the time u actually get ur degree: medical science (4 years)- medicine + surgery (atleast 7 years)
but God!! ur only 15!! so u still got a long time to think... but if u havent picked ur hsc subjects yet then meke suer u do chem and maybe bio as well in case ur uni needs them.. (btw my whole entire email is based on the thought that ur in australia... if ur not, then discard the email and accept me saying that 'i have nooo idea')
but always remeber: [glow=red,2,300]TWO THINGS U MUST LET GOD TAKE CARE OF:
    1) UR MARRIAGE
    2) UR CAREER[/glow]
so yeh .. just do ur part and let God decide wen the time comes...
  • thanks Trinity+. ( i never thought that someone was going to reply that quick)

this may be a coincidence but medical science is the popular degree for people that are rejected from undergraduate medicine. to do medical science you need a UAI of around 90-92 and no UMAT or interview is reqired. Umm.. are u from America?? because i think a bridging course is something diffrent. in Austrlia a bridging course is a course that quickly goes over a year 12(HSC) topic. peole do this because they did not study it and it is reccomended for their university course. medical science is 3 years and post graduate medicine is 4 years and u also need to do internship and residency and so on. and about doing medical science, i have heard from the "egyptian community" that you can't land a solid job... so.. i was thinking of doing physio because if you have a degree in physio you can work with it if you don't get into medicine the graduate path....

yeah i know im 15 lol but i dunno why im just worring. i think it is because im just about to enter the final 2 years of high schooling and all, that im thinking about career choices.

but as you said (which I could not of have said better) that i should leave it to [glow=red,2,300]God[/glow] aswell as life decisions.

but one last question. Lets say i want to get into medicine and become a surgeon, but God really wants me to become lets say... an accountant, im not going to have in my mind to become an accountant. is God going to change my mind over night and one day ill wake up and say " you know what, i don't think med if for me, i want to become an accountant"

how will i know if medicine is not for me?

  • Hey Adomad. I didn't do so well in the UMAT, got an excellent UAI, and still had to go to a private University to do my medical degree. It's tough. I suppose the way I approached it is to just do your best, and wait and see, just hoping for the best. You are only 15, and you are sure that science is your strength.

I would not tend to do Biomed, because the degree is rather useless unless you do Medicine, or you do Research. If you hate research, BioMed tends to be a waste of a degree- that's what I have heard from my friends who did BioMed. You should talk collaterally, of course, with those who are currently doing it and those who finished. If you need to know about this course, please give me a private message and I will try to get you into contact with someone who is currently doing BioMed (by the way, it's also called Bachelor of Medical Science). Advance Science is also quite a hard course and has limited career possibilities unless your personality is one that is self-motivating.

It really depends on your personality. The lucky thing with Medicine is its rather straight forward path. Most roads are travelled before, and are clearly traceable. However, UMAT tends to tease out those who are less able naturally to cope with Medicine.

Leaving it to God, really means "trusting in God" and not worrying. It is not in not making plans, or thinking about the future. It is foolishness not to anticipate and it's foolishness to worry, because worrying is just going to self-perpetuate you into ungodly methods to gain back security.
  • diagnostic doctor? i want to be that.
lol its hard work. but its great, fun and rewarding.  But nevertheless, no matter what you want to become, God will be at your side.
Good luck.  And may the power of the cross strenghten you=)

  • Hi mahraeel,

Not sure what state of Australia your in, but if you happen to be in South Australia (like me) you might like to consider:

-Pharmacy (Last year's cuttoff score was a TER of 95.35)
    -Podiatry (87.95)
    -Physiotherapy (97)
    -Medical Radiation (94.05)
    -Laboratory Medicine (70.55)
    -Forensics (69.55)
    -Biomedical Science (83.4)
    -Medical Science (80.55)

Not sure if this will help, oh well.. good luck with your future!

I wouldn't worry about that. Things have a way of just working when God wants them to. If you are being sincere in your spiritual life, and trying hard to do succeed in waht you do, stuff just falls into place perfectly the way God wants it to. Don't believe me?:

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" Romans 8:28

That's one of my favourite verses! Anyways good luck with everything!

    God Bless!
PS: I didn't know there were so many other Aussies here! Anybody from NSW?
  • definitely agree with you  epchois_nai_nan =)
look adomad i kno it sounds a bit crazy and unreal, but u'll be soo surprised at how things can work out at the end (only if God permitts).. only 2day i heard about a girl who got 96 UAI and didnt do so well in her UMAT  and sumhow she still got into medicine... so just trust in God, do ur best and God will surely do the rest!!
    p.s. epchois_nai_nan , im from NSW :)

(and depending on how i go with 3u this yr, i might do 4u maths instead of 1u sor)
    u ready for yr 11??
  • Hi Aussie friends!
I am in south England but I feel close to you theologically  :)
In reply to your question about studying, i am copying part of my previous answer to a question on mahreel about prayer.

"First, tell God that whatever He asks you to do is ok with you. I mean for example, even if its His will for you to fail your exams and get a really menial job, you agree with Him because it means you will have time to talk to the people you work with about your faith and you want treasures in heaven, not a good pay packet (I didn't say it was easy!) Then, once you're ready to do anything, read in the Bible about the right attitudes towards people, for example; being humble, returning good for evil, giving money to the poor, praising God if it's you that's poor, submitting to your leaders, honouring your wife and being ready to sacrifice your life for your Lord (Ouch, it really isn't easy!).
Now you are equipped with a genuine desire to serve the Lord and the right attitude to life. Now you can ask 2 or 3 wise people (mentor at work, teacher, parent, aunt, friend) for their advice and think about it. You know that if the advice contradicts any of the attitudes described in the Bible you can ditch it (eg cheat in the exam, marry a non-Christian etc) but hopefully you will come away with one or two good ideas.
Finally, pray again (yes it is really all about prayer!) and then do what seems right.
When I had to take a difficult decision, I did this and prayed the 'Prayer asking for the will of God' from the Agpeya (I have an Arabic/English one from Connecticut) and it worked out really well."

I had no idea what i wanted to do when i was 17 (a bit late to still not know!) but I prayed and eventually, almost at the last moment I read (by 'chance') the page about a medical degree in the university handbook (here in uk we do it direct in 5 years, no pre-med degree). I then changed all my choices to medicine and just scraped in to university a year later. I just trusted God for the future.
20 years since i filled in my form I have nearly finished my specialisation in surgery (it has been a bumpy ride, jobs and training positions are in short supply in my country) and I can honestly say God has given me his peace and grace every step of the way.

After you've made your choice, don't worry too much 'was that the right thing to do?' (there is often more than one right answer).
Ask 'how can i best serve God in the situation i find myself in?'

I pray for all who are making choices right now, please pray for me too.
  • haha lol hey st. bishoy thanks but im not fro austrailia.lol im from America(new york) lol thanks tho thos r great=)

3u maths (attempting to accelerated yr 12 this yr.. so pray for that)

Wow that's not easy. I'll pray for that 4 sure. I was doing the accelerated course too until last term...it got too much. Its pretty intense but I spose it really pays off. R u gna do the HSC Exam for it soon then?

    [quote author=Trinity+ link=topic=7185.msg95454#msg95454 date=1223808088]
    u ready for yr 11??

Yea I guess so. I hope its more fun that Year 10 was, at least ur doing stuff you want to do.

  • yep very soon, in exactly 14 days!!

I was doing the accelerated course too until last term...it got too much.

why did u give up soo quickly?? look seriously it is sooo worth it!! and u guys have a good advantage that mr. michael (or is it mr. gerges) started early with you... i mean yr 10 is early enough to even accelerate 4u!!! please dunt give up completely... if u cant do 3u then atleast do 2u.. it'll save u soo much time in yr12.... i wish i had more time to work on it... im already regreting every single moment i wasted in yr 11...

yr 11 is definitely more fun that all the past yrs!! its just sooo different!!! teachers are more committed and of course the courses are more interesting (since u chose them)... and enough that u get to wear the navy blue uniform... u feel really special ;) but its all serious work and u really would want to do well...

um.. correct me if im wrong, but if ur in yr 10 an u go to st.marks, THEN THAT MEANS THAT U START UR YEARLIES 2MORO!! is that right???
  • your only 15.
Think about this in 3 yrs time.
  • ahh i think i lost u!!! [quote author=ChristopherBoctor link=topic=7185.msg95506#msg95506 date=1223911484]

Yea I know but I was becoming so lost it wasn't funny. Cos I was doing like Mock Trial and stuff lik dat so every now and then I would miss a double period and I would come back and he's finished half a chapter! I was failing the exams and I was just completely lost. And the other thing is I really hate maths. Like I can only do half an hour of it at a time b4 I just want to stop living. If I had kept with it and taken it seriously, I would've been doing about two hours of it every night. Not including my other subjects. So I guess its not that I couldn't do it, its more that I just don't want to lol.

But I think they're being way too ambitious with it tho. The class I left (yea its mr. Gerges) was 26 people! In selective schools they only accelerate 2 or 3. The people who aren't coping are just sticking with it cos they don't want to look dumb, but I think that's a waste of time. U mite as well make the most out of year 10 and then go slow with it next year.

But of course if you can handle it its a great idea. I'll pray 4 when you do ur 3U HSC for it! I hope you do well!

sorry, i meant that for Adomad.

hey trinity, if you do accelerated 2unit, and you are doing 3unit next year, i think you should try doing 4unit, because its not that much harder :) . The only hard thing about it is Harder 3unit.
I did accelerator 2unit and i only got 91 in it. Now i'm doing 4unit and im doing good :)
