I don't mean to be short-sighted when I ask this, but isn't it kind of an 'assumption' to call the people who died yesterday as martyrs? In order for one to be a martyr, doesn't one have to die for a purpose?
So how do we know that the reason that they died was because they were Christian? How do we know the murderers didn't have a different motive? Were those men a part of those clashes out of anger towards the police? Were they honestly thinking about Christ when this was going on?
Don't get me wrong, I'm still very upset at the fact that they were killed, but I just feel like it's a strong assumption to make when we call them martyrs.

Bishops of the COC Holy Synod declared they were all martyrs whose precious blood are feeding the Church's Vineyard tree, also that the wounded ones were blessed and will rejoice with Christ. This includes all previous victims for the sake of Christ's name.

but i understand the question, because the early very false reporting of the incident from european and american websites said there were people fighting in the street in sectarian violence and so the army had to intervene and basically got a bit carried away. so anyone could ask the same question based on that information.
but what actually happened (having read several accounts and seen videos, i was not there) was that thousands of people carrying crosses and accompanied by clergy carried out a peaceful protest and were attacked by people in the neighbourhood with sticks and stones. then later the army fired bullets into the air to turn them back but the protesters refused to turn back. they had registered that they would protest, it was an official action. it was NOT a group of 'cray Christians' randomly deciding to throw some stones at police and army. so when the protesters refused to turn back, the army shot at them and then some tanks ran over them, turning from the road right into the crowd deliberately as people tried to flee in all directions as soon as the tanks turned into them.
other reports explained that some people who were not part of the church group joined in in order to attack the soldiers and produce violence from the soldiers against the protestors.
may God repose their souls and may they pray for us before the throne of our Saviour.
