Bornos of Priests and Bishops

Is there any reason, written or oral, that explains why priests remove the bornos (cope) once the liturgy of the faithful begins? Or is it just one of those unexplained customs that have become the norm. Should the priest/bishops be fully vested for the entire liturgy?

    There is a spiritual teaching that says the priest needs to lower himself in the presence of the king.... And the King's presence in the liturgy is perfected after the descent of the Spirit after the Institution. But I think that only makes sense if the bornos and all the extra parts the priest wears make him of high rank.
