matthew 9:15-17

can anyone explain the meaning of this parable to me, espicially the bolded part? thank you

Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often,[d] but Your disciples do not fast?”
15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. 17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

    The way Jesus was teaching was not how the Pharisees taught. Jesus was doing something new when he taught. Think about it this way, would you drink water out of a dirty cup? or would you wash it or use a new cup? I'd think you'd choose the latter. We have to give up our former self in order to take in the new, which is Jesus Christ and his teachings. You must be born again, this time giving Christ the wheel and letting him drive, instead of yourself. You basically aren't supposed to be the same person if you claim to be a follower of Jesus. You can't continue living a sinful lifestyle and be a follower of Jesus. You must be again, new with Christ. If you fulfill this, only then will you fulfill true peace and hapiness, on earth and in Heaven.

    "Therefore, if Anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation: the old has gone, the new has come" II Corinthians 5:17

    ohhh so hes not talking bout fasting in the bold part, but rather about accepting his new teachings...thank you for the clarifaction

    No, he was actually talking about fasting. His disciples weren't fasting like the Pharisees (in which case if they did fast, it would be for their glory, not for humbling themselves). The Pharisees questioned Jesus why they weren't fasting, and he explained that his teachings were different, that they were not required to fast yet. They did fast later, however. Jesus was trying to teach his teachings first, and then that way when they fast, they will fast unlike the Pharisees who make a scene about fasting so they can enlarge their already expanding heads (because they were full of themselves). Instead, he wanted to teach them to fast with heart and purity, so that your fast can be worth more than any glory you receive here; Ultimately, a spot in Heaven.
