Can I drink Coffee?

edited June 2007 in Faith Issues
It would be best if during the fast I could stop even using coffee but I think I REALLY need it

a priest said (if I heard him right).. the devil will say to you when you are tired.. have coffee.. you need it to help you concentrate

I know his message was really relevant to me but does that always mean God was speaking through this priest? I don't think I should follow his advice and stop drinking coffee if thats what he wants since I have attention deficit disorder and I think I really need atleast coffee if I am not using my Attention Deficit Disorder drug... I don't think I should follow his advice but I fear I might be sinning against God if I do not.

maybe its not relevant since I have attention deficit disoder but another priest I know does not believe it exists or does not think it should be treated with drugs .. he might think its a spiritual problem.. I don't know.. or he might think something else

the problem with coffee though.. possibly it makes you more irritable but I think I need it still

I also want to add churches sometimes have events that involve coffee so if priests do not think its a sin to use it then why should they think its a sin to use it when studying? but they might think its a sin to even use it then if its during a fast.

I think I might still continue to use it

  • I am lost why do you want to stop drinking coffee again? How is it a sin? Unless you are saying that you are getting addicted to it then that is a sin but if you are taking as a medicine or drink it every now and then. Than what is wrong?
    Pray for me
  • Dear Mike,

It is usually unwise to get this hung up on a detail. Talk to your priest if you are in doubt. Fasting is about showing our obedience and love to God - not about getting obsessed on points of detail for their own sake - remember the Pharisees in the Bible?

    In Christ,

    Anglian

  • Dear mikeforjesus,
Yes God speaks through priests, but that doesn't mean that the priests are faultless. They sometimes say wrong things, but how God works is that He uses even the wrong information for our good. About your point, yes Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is a medical syndrome and should be treated with drugs. For priests that don't know this, that's their fault, not yours. It is not a spiritual condition, and if you think coffee helps you, then go for it. Don't stop it. But like ChristIsMySaviour and Anglian said, don't let this habit overcome you, even if you need it badly, since you use drugs alongside. And when you are not using drugs you surely have to take coffee. I hope you understand: I am confusing sometimes, aren't I?
God bless you all and mention me in your prayers

wikipedia is sometimes not good but you can google.com search attention defict disorder.. I might only have inattention symptoms now as an adult if I ever had the other symptoms as a child which I think I might of.

my brain wave pattern suggests adhd .. I went and did a head test haha

  • Oh wow...
I was reading about that. But is it chronic?
Does drinking coffee affect your condition? WHat about Decafeinated?

I think ophadece , being a doctor, could advise more. Im not sure.

But its true, drinking coffee does make u hyper active, so u should cut back on that.
  • Dear all,
Just few points, as I am not really specialised in this type of disorders. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is not classified into acute or chronic conditions, as it is one of those conditions that occur through development, and seems to wear away with time. Caffeine, as in coffe, is a stimulant substance, which exerts different effects on different people, but it surely helps persons with ADHD who are in a period of not taking medicines. It certainly helps. Like vassilios pointed out it can have other bad effects on other people, especially those who become addicted on this stimulant substance. By the way, caffeine is also present in a lower percentage in tea, and cola drinks. So please, be careful of addiction on these substances.
God bless you all and mention my name in your prayers
  • Drinking Coffee isn't 'wrong', you say that you're body doesn't function properly without coffee.. and that sounds like an addiction to me... If you cannot stop drinking coffee and you get headaches or any other physical reaction when you don't have it your body is addicted to it.. that is a sin. Coffee is not bad for you, but when you drink coffee regularly, going without coffee causes physical effects, such as headaches and fatigue, and also emotional/mental effects such as a lack of concentration, irritability, impatience and even mild depression. Therefore the effects that coffee has on your body are harmful, even if they are short term, and so you should abstain from regular coffee drinking. It does, as ophadece mentioned, contain a stimulant drug (caffiene) which make it also, to some extent, have an effect on the actions and choices made while under its influence.. Coffee isn't 'bad', but it's easy to use it it in a bad way without realising.

Abstaining from coffee after addiction is not easy either.. you cannot go 'cold turkey'.. you must lessen the ammount you drink every day in small ammounts so that it doesn't cause huge side-effects. Hope this helps.

I don't know much on the subject, but I have an idea about what ADHD is (my friend had it) and i can hardly see how coffee drinking would help ??? But then again, I am no doctor.. ophadece could you please explain this? Oh, and why wouldn't they take their medicine if they have not recovered.. ?
    +God Bless.
  • Dear Hizz_child and all,
We don't want to convert this topic into a medical one, plus I am not specialised in this type of disorders as I said before. But let me tell you what my understanding is. Coffee in the case of ADHD is A CURE. It is taken between the period where you use drugs, because the drugs used for treating this disorder have many side effects (unlike coffee in that case) and should be separated by medicine-free periods. This is where coffee helps. Coffee is not recommended during the medicine period, and sugar is recommended to not be added, as this itself may aggravate ADHD. I hope that helps.

  • Ok.. I still don't see it but i guess I'll just take your word for it then... I think this is one of those special, FOC kinda things mikeforjesus..
    +God Bless.
  • i have diagnosed myself with ADD, ...[and a lot of other things] but, my parents keep denying it :/ hmm, so if cofee is a cure..then that's why cofee makes me happy and focused :) hhaha
uhmm, since we're not mormon, i don't see a problem with cofee. if it's the fasting, you can fast using anything else, it doesn't have to be cofee.

Coffee makes you happy and focussed because it's a stimulant drug.
