Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Hey people,

During the day of the pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, they all spoke in tongues etc, and could do miracles etc.. u all know the story - im sure.

When we are baptised, are we receiving the same Holy Spirit as these apostles received, or only the gifts of the spirit (love, patience,peace etc...)...

Its just, when we are baptised, why don't we all start talking in different tongues???

    Yes.

    or only the gifts of the spirit (love, patience,peace etc...)...

    As part of receiving the Holy Spirit, we are given the potential to possess all the gifts that the Spirit has to offer.  When we work in sync with the Holy Spirit, we grow in our spiritual gifts.  However, if we quench the Holy Spirit in us, then we cannot grow, since we are ignoring the Spirit who is the source of these gifts.

    Probably because the majority of people who are baptized are infants who cannot speak to begin with.  Although, I would have to say, that any person who speaks more than one language can speak in tongues.  ;)

    lol...i think ( my own opinion) that the holy spirit gaives us gifts while we grow up...as someone can teach easily and somebody no, somebody can sing and somebody no...every one recived his/her own little gift from the holy spirit...and the holy spirit is working in us everytime....

    You are first granted the Holy Spirit. than by letting Him work in you, you are granted the fruit of the Spirit. the word fruit would mean the result of. the result of the Holy Spirit working in you is the fruit.

    you don't have to exactly speak in tongues...languages. even thoo am sure some do. it's not taken literally. it refares to how you should preach the people to all people. if u can preach in other ways....sure...why not.
    if am not mistaken some protestants say that we have to actually speak more than 1 language as a requirment to get to heaven.

    Just wanted to clarify something: There is a difference between the fruits of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit.  For a list of the fruits of the Spirit, see Galatians 5:22-23.  For a list of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, see 1Corinthians 12:4-11.

    Miracles do happen for a purpose. The gift of tongue speaking happened for a purpose. Remember,before our Lord ascended to heaven,he ordered his apostles to go out into the world and baptise all humans in the name of the Father,and the Son and the Holy Spirit.He told them to wait until the Holy Spirit descends on them. In those days, when Christ was not known to the world, His apostles had to travel to foreign lands to spread the good news. Hence,they needed to know the language of the people whom they were preaching. St Thomas went India. St Mark came to Egypt. St Matthew went to Ethipia. Therefore, it is clear that the apostles had to endowed with the gift of languages as this was a means for them to achieve their goals. These days, where you have a bible in almost all languages of the world,speaking in tongues is no longer needed.The locals are able to preach in their own lang to their own people.
