Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

edited July 2007 in Faith Issues
Hi, I just came across a thread where Iqbal wrote on this subject and said:

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not a sin amongst other sins. It refers to the unrepentent pursuit of ANY sin--it is not a type of sin, it is a method of dealing with sin. Someone who is disposed towards same-sex attraction, yet who struggles with the Grace of God to resist homosexual lusts and acts in every shape and form that such lusts and acts may be manifest is not committing blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
So, let's say if someone commits the same sin EVERY day - is that blaspheming against the Holy Spirit?

If that person falls into the same sin everyday, but gets up, repents and confesses it, then no.  It is when a person sins everyday, without remorse, without repenting and without confession for their entire life, until the day they die, then it becomes a blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.  The reason is that you have willfully refused to allow the Holy Spirit to work in you.

    Oh i see, ok. Thanks.

But then that could apply for anything: smoking, gambling, etc? Non?
  • Yes you are correct, that means that ANY sin committed with out repentance and confession and remorse is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit

What if, after you shut the Holy Spirit off - let's say for about 2 months, you then repent and confess whatever that was a sin at the time?

We often have spiritual highs and lows.  This is not something that is uncommon.  We must strive to continue to have spiritual highs, and not just be satisfied with attaining a certain level of spirituality, but striving onward to attain higher levels.  That being said, blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a life-long (i.e. up to the point of death) resistance to the work of the Holy Spirit inside you.  So no, a 2 month lapse, a 2 year lapse, a 10 year lapse, is not blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.  It is when you refuse to repent and confess your entire life and die in your sins, then it is blasphemy against the Spirit.
  • Just as Krfac said(sorry if i spelled that wrong) if you confess the sin and truly repent then it is not blasphemy. the only time it is blasphemy is when it is to the point of your death that you did not repent for a certain sin(s). He was basically saying those who don't repent will not be forgiven

Phew! Had me shocked their buddy!! Thanks for that!
  • Guys. Often we often sin without awareness that it is a sin. I think that blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is when the Holy Spirit makes you aware of your sinfulness, and you shut the Holy Spirit and persist with the sinful lifestyle.

For instance, it was agreed that smoking is a sin. Now 50 years ago, before the effects of smoking was proven, a person who died and has smoked all his life- do you think that he blasphemed the Holy Spirit even if he lived a Christian life?
  • No.  St. Moses the Black confessed every single night of his life with bitter tears--he, a blessed saint and most honored, cannot even escape certain sins that may plague a human being not every day, but even every hour.  That varies for different individuals, but that's not blasphemy against the Spirit.  As long as you repent and you are living, you are still in the hands of the Lord.  Blasphemy against the Spirit is simply giving up on God--suicide, for example, being the most blatant form of blasphemy against the Spirit.  So how can He save you if you have chosen to destroy yourself both physically and spiritually?  That really is the true essence of "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit".  Once you've destroyed your own being [which is not yours, but God's], taken God's will into your hands, and most importantly, deprived yourself of the hope, that IS God, you're done for because your spirit can't come back to repent, because then it is far too late yet the price far too costly.  An entire lifetime of sin without penance and confession, likewise, is called suicide of the spirit, which in essence, is the same thing with respect to one's spiritual life rather than physical life.  God bless.
