Can someone explain what St. Paul means when he says "He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.". Romans 4:25.
I think we can translate 'justification' in this instance to mean 'faith'.
Jesus Christ was allowed by God to die for our sins and raised to life as the fullfillment of the faith. This chapter speaks of the 'faith' of our father Abraham and how he was (is) 'justified' by faith in the Almighty.
In the Name of the Father+ and the Son+ and of the Holy Spirit+, the One True God. Amen!
We first must understand what justification means. Justification is the act whereby God forgives the sins of a believer and begins to transform him or her into a righteous (being good, just and blameless) person (Orthodox Study Bible, glossary, page 801).
Jesus Christ died for the forgiveness of our offenses. If He had been a sinner, the law would have condemned Him as it did everyone else. But He is perfect love, and love is self-sacrifice on behalf of the beloved. The purpose of His Death and Resurrection was our justification, to bring us into a living relationship with God, (Orthodox Study Bible, commentary, page 347).
