The British Orthodox Church

edited December 1969 in Random Issues
I was just wondering, if our brothers the BOC use Coptic in their liturgy?
Also, what liturgy do they use? (st Basil, St. Cyril, St Gregory..)

During any major feasts (Ressurection, Ascention, etc), what hymns do they sing? I checked the BOC website, and it seems that most of the clergy are of British origen, so can one assume that there are no arabic hymns used in their services?

What hymns do they sing during Communion? I'm really curious to know. In the CoC we always sing Psalm 150 (guaranteed!). Do they do this also?? Do they use the CoC tunes?? or do they have their own tunes?? Also, do they have CoC tunes with just English words or do they have their own music that identifies with their cultural background??

Its probably a dumb question, but can any CoC Christian attend Communion in the B.O.C?

Finally, would anyone know if there is an analagous Church in France??

I'd love to hear from anyone who is part of the B.O.C.

Thanks

  • With regards to communion: yes, we can partake of communion in the B.O.C. as it falls under the jurisdiction of H.H. Pope Shenouda III.

Thanks Sev, I saw the pics of H.H. with our brother deacons of the B.O.C. It was quite a fascinating experience to see our Church grow in this way.

If you go to their website and read the comments, it appears that this Church started out as Christians who wished to embrace Orthodoxy, chosing the Coptic branch (as far as I understood, but please correct me if i'm mistaken). I think this is wonderful news personally.

But do we know anything else about their mass/rituals/language of prayer?

I know they are exactly ONE with us in doctrine/faith/sacraments etc... but what about praise, and worship, and langauge. I mean, do they do tamgeeds??
  • I believe they use the Liturgy of St. James but i'm not 100% sure on this

No... that's exactly what i heard!! wow..
I didnt know that St. James wrote a liturgy. But.. do u know anything else about them?
  • There use to be a lot of liturgies like 14 i think but then they decided it was too many. we still use some parts from St. John's liturgy that begins with Exalted Above All.
  • I've attended a short British Orthodox service, but not a full liturgy I'm afraid. You're right that they pray the liturgy of St James, which I learnt during a conversation with a British Orthodox priest. As far as I know, they pray the same Matins prayers that we do (Raising of Incense), but they do not use the Coptic language.

I'll do some digging around for you, there's a British Orthodox gathering close to where I live
  • Does anyone have the text for the liturgy of Saint James?
