http://studylight.org/com/mhc-comMatthew Henry Bible Commentary. It is a good practical commentary. However being not orthodox he may say a few wrong things. But he seems to understand the bible properly unlike some other protestants. I received benefit from it.

I heard the same.Could someone confirm that this is a good commentary.
I know nearly 90% of the people here use the Orthodox Study Bible... but its only in English and only for the NT.
I read so many commentaries, that i'm a bit worried about reading something from them.
A lot of people think that when Christ said that if u have faith as a mustard seed, u can ask a mountain to move and it will move. For them, they don't take it literally. They take it like metaphorically, and they INSIST that God wasn't talking about a real, bonified physical mountain. He was talking about problems.
On the other hand, being Coptic, this goes against my Church's track record as being the gold medalist in moving actual "physical" mountains.
maybe you should not read it .. because Matthew Henry was against the church of rome's giving honour to the saints (he seems to be against that but he also thinks they give worship to them) and doing other stuff like consecrating pictures. We do that too and that can't be bad.. he can be persuasive with some of the verses he uses but I think he is wrong.
Not everyone is strong to go against the wrong things some people say..
Anyway an orthodox church near where I live has his commentary in the library.. but this could be an error from the church. Another library somewhere else was worser and had books which I think are wrong in their teaching. People need discernment.
I know I tend to be weak..
I had good intentions in spreading this.. because it is good in other things.
I appreciate the response. I guess its best I didnt read Mathew Henry's. Its SOO Common and so widely available.. its a shame.
I speak with many protestant/baptists and although many things they are spiritually correct, they lack insight and spiritual depth, and definately spiritual tradition that we have in our CHurch.
The Orthodox Study Bible is now complete with copious patriatic notes and not just NT.
As recommended, the commentaries of Blessed Theophylact are avilable in English though, as far as I know, only the four gospels. They make a brilliant read on their own though he was a Bulgarian Orthodox bishop.
So, for starters, you have a wealth of information.
Please pray for me
Aidan
We do not take the verse in question literally. If you recall, the literal interpretation was one imposed on the Scriptures by the Jewish adversary of the Copts; it wasn't proposed by Pope Zacharias or St Sawirus. God peformed the miracle according to the literal interpretation demanded of the Copts nevertheless out of His Grace--for the sake of preserving the Church on account of her great Faith.

As for Biblical commentaries...I strongly and strictly advise that people refrain from Protestant commentaries. The OSB is a good resource. Let's not also forget the various commentaries by Fr. T. Malaty which are patristically oriented (though, unfortunately, some are very poorly translated). For those with the will and energy to go even deeper, whole commentaries on various books of the Scriptures by certain Fathers of the Church are available freely online (e.g. St Cyril's commentary on the Gospel of John). The language is somewhat difficult for a younger audience though.

The endnotes in the Orthodox New Testament are also really good. They consist of quotes taken directly from various Church Fathers and explanations of Greek words and grammar.

The commentaries by Blessed Theophylact are excellent. They're profound and detailed, but easy to read.

Gentlemen,
These books are good. Really. I recommend the OSB also.. but our problem is the OT.
I don't care how much it costs, I'm prepared to get anything in French/English that's orthodox for the OT.
Iqbal,
Are you talking about the Moqatam mountain?
Thanks
