Ecumenical councils

edited December 1969 in Coptic Orthodox Church
Hi

I look for litterature describing the ecumenical councils, especially the councils Nicaea, Constantinople, Ephesus and Chalcedon. Also I head about about a council after Ephesus but before the council in Chalcedon, accepted by Coptic Church.

I am interested in English translations of the aggrements done by these councils.

Thanks in advance.

This is from the renowned Calvin College. Please donate to them- I have visited them so many times, it is just amazing. They have all the Church Fathers (that I know of)!

You mean the Second council of Ephesus. That counclis failed becasue it developed on lies that brought churches away from each other and some close to each other where then you had the council of Chalcedon to officially make the division.
  • There are only three official ecumenical councils: Nicaea, Constantinople 381, and Ephesus 431. Ephesus 449 is a quasi-Ecumenical council.

Chalcedon is certainly not an Ecumenical Council.

Excuse me?!! Ephesus II-449 is a holy Synod of the Church. Watch what you say my friend. What are your sources? Clearly they are not Orthodox. You need to be careful with your sources.

The source clay recommends is not a source I would recommend the common lay person reading let alone donating on behalf of. Fr. T. Malaty has discussed the Ecumenical Councils quite nicely in lay terms in a few texts. That one that immediately comes to mind is his 'The Coptic Orthodox Church as a Church of Erudition' or something like that. Fr. V.C. Samuel is the most reliable source on Ephesus 449.

yes. you are more right with the "quasi-Ecumenical" word which what i've learned.

well i should of been more specific. first, my source is not Clay's (i am not sure what source is that). If I am not mistaken the person who was being "reviewed" by the council, Eutyches, lied and said the Orthodox teaching, which was diffrent from what he was teaching before, and by saying what's right, Pope Dioskoros have to accept what he said because he was judged on what he said there in the council.
