I was just doing a project for an AP euro class and it said the first ever church was the catholic church but I always thought the copts were there first, so who was first?
In the aspect of Europe yes the Roman catholics were first, but remember before the schisms, we were all one church with one doctrine. But as far as the world goes the first church was of course in Jerusalem.
The copts were never first. St. Mark only came to Egypt after being with St. Paul. It's in Acts until they split up. The Catholic church refers to the Holy Church in Rome. Ironically, Catholic actually means universal, meaning that the church was united at the time. Being that Jerusalem was part of the Roman Empire at the time, it is very true to say the catholic church was the first church.
