Doing the sign of the cross on your mouth.

edited December 1969 in Random Issues
I have seen people in church doing the sign of the cross over their mouths when they yawn. Can someone please explain where this came from, or what the significance is, and just a bit about what it means? Thanks.

  • I'm not exactly sure how it started.. but I know that they make the sign of the cross over the mouth to protect their minds from sleeping/wandering.. I hope that helped

please pray for me and my weakness
  • it's tradition that i was learned when we were young (and i am sure many others): when we would be saying "Our Father..." we would yawn and we would take that as something from the devil that stops us from actually saying the prayer because, obviously, you can't yawn and continue praying in the same time. When we grew up, we kept the tradition.....some forgot it. But mainly, general manners say that we should cover out mouth when we yawn  :).
  • This did help, thank you all very much.  :)
  • they use to do that in the old days to keep the demons from coming into their mouths
    =]
  • Actually, because there are so many flies in Egypt, it helps keep them out and their pestilence and disease.
